Who we are

Peter Townsend is a Recovery Coach Professional (RCP), Recovery Coach Academy trained in both the UK and the USA. He survived 25 years of addiction and 14.5 years across nine prisons in Ireland and the UK. After a near-death experience in London in 2020, he completely transformed his life. He now offers 1:1 recovery coaching focused on accountability, structure, and action — primarily for men navigating early and long-term recovery, life after prison, and the rebuild that follows collapse.

Sophia Murphy is a wellness, growth, and connection coach specialising in emotional resilience, relationships, self-worth, and personal development. Her work draws on her own lived experience of loss, toxic patterns, people-pleasing, and the slow return to self-trust. She brings warmth, depth, and a sharp eye for the patterns that keep women small.

Together they host Having The Chats, a recovery and wellness podcast featuring raw, honest conversations about addiction, transformation, relationships, and personal growth. The podcast has grown into a worldwide audience and led directly to the founding of the coaching practice you see here.

What we offer

Who this is for

Our coaching is for adults who are stuck in cycles of addiction, emotional shutdown, repeating destructive habits, relationship strain, or low self-trust — and who are finally ready to do something different.

  • People navigating recovery from alcohol, cocaine, gambling, or other compulsive behaviours.
  • Anyone rebuilding life after addiction, prison, treatment, or chaos.
  • People who are technically "fine" but quietly know they are still running from something.
  • People feeling stuck, disconnected, or ready for real change.
  • Couples working through trust, communication, or post-addiction relationship strain.
  • Family members and partners trying to support someone they love.
  • Those seeking emotional support, accountability, and personal transformation.
  • Schools and organisations wanting impactful wellness workshops and lived-experience talks.

How we work

All sessions are delivered online over secure video and available worldwide. We combine lived experience with a person-centred, non-judgemental approach. No scripts. No shame. Just honest conversations and real action.

Most clients begin with a single discovery call so we can hear what is going on, what you have already tried, and what you actually want to change. There is no script and no pressure to commit on the call. If we are the right fit, we agree on a starting cadence — usually weekly or fortnightly sessions — and a focus for the first block of work. Sessions are sixty minutes. Between sessions you get a private client portal with habit tracking, reflections, worksheets, and direct messaging.

We do not believe in coaching that creates dependency. The goal of every engagement is to help you build internal structure that outlasts us — habits, language, self-knowledge, and the kind of quiet self-respect that makes the old life genuinely unattractive.

Why lived experience matters

Lived experience without training is just a story. Training without lived experience often misses what addiction and rebuilding actually feel like from the inside. We bring both. When you tell us what is going on, you do not have to translate it first, soften it, or make it palatable. We have been there. That changes what becomes possible in a session — and it is the single thing clients most often say made the difference.

The patterns we see most often

The high-functioning drinker who has held everything together publicly while drowning privately. The man out of treatment who has done the first hard thing — getting clean — and now has to do the second hard thing, which is becoming someone he can respect. The woman who left the toxic relationship and now cannot understand why she keeps half-looking back. The couple where addiction has ended but the resentment has not. The parent who is sober for the kids but starting to realise sobriety alone is not a life. We name these patterns out loud because part of the work is helping you see that what feels uniquely shameful is, in fact, deeply human and deeply common.

Online, worldwide, and why that matters

Every session we run is online. That is a deliberate choice, not a limitation. Online means you can do this from your kitchen on a Tuesday morning instead of taking a half-day off work. It means there is no waiting room, no awkward arrival, no chance of bumping into someone you know. It means rural clients in Mayo get the same level of support as clients in central Dublin, London, New York, Sydney, or Toronto. We have clients in over a dozen countries — the work translates because the underlying material does not change with geography.

If you are not ready to book yet

Plenty of people land here, read everything, and are not ready to book a call. That is fine. Listen to a few episodes of Having The Chats. Read the blog. Download a free guide. Stay around the edges of the work for as long as you need to. When something shifts and you know it is time, we will still be here.

Frequently asked questions

What is recovery coaching?

Recovery coaching is a structured, action-focused partnership that helps individuals break free from destructive patterns — whether related to alcohol, cocaine, or other behaviours — and rebuild their lives with accountability and support. It is not therapy and it is not a twelve-step meeting; it is a complementary, forward-focused practice.

Do Peter and Sophia offer online coaching?

Yes. Peter and Sophia both offer 1:1 online coaching sessions worldwide over secure video.

Is recovery coaching available in Ireland?

Yes. Peter and Sophia are based in Ireland and offer recovery coaching, wellness coaching, and relationship coaching to people in Ireland, the UK, and worldwide through online sessions.

Do you offer relationship and couples coaching?

Yes. We offer relationship and couples coaching online — combining honest challenge with emotional safety to help couples rebuild trust and improve communication.

How long does a coaching engagement last?

Most clients work with us for an initial three-month block of weekly or fortnightly sessions, then re-evaluate. Some stay longer; some move to a lower cadence. We do not lock people into long contracts.

Is what I tell you confidential?

Yes. Sessions are private and confidential. We follow professional coaching ethics around confidentiality and client safety.
